Developed by the Botanic Gardens and State Herbarium and Makers Empire, Watching Glass Grow is a Challenge Course for students in years 3 to 6, accessed via Makers Empire’s 3D Design app.
Created in the lead up to Chihuly in the Botanic Garden – an exhibition featuring glass art by Dale Chihuly, held September 2024 to April 2025 – Watching Glass Grow saw students exploring the history of glass, learning how artists create art works using glass as a medium, and using Makers Empire 3D software to develop their own artworks.
More than 4000 students took part in the course, and from these 10 designs have been selected to be part of a virtual gallery in Adelaide Botanic Garden.
To explore this self-guided trail, download and print the Watching Glass Grow scavenger hunt map using the link below. Once you have found a student design marker in the gardens, use a compatible phone or tablet to scan the QR code and see the winning designs come to life.
Educators are invited to bring classes to see the winning designs displayed in Augmented Reality, and enjoy the self-guided trail. During your visit, challenge your learners to find inspiration in the shapes, colours and patterns of nature that they can apply to their 3D designs back in the classroom.
