This Challenge Course is designed as a companion course to the UAE Grade 3 Computing, Creative Design and Innovation e-books, however, can also be utilized with other grades. It is aligned with the Technical Graphics and CAD Unit as well as the Design Process and STREAM Project.
As they move through the Challenge Course, learners explore how designers and engineers use shapes to communicate ideas and solve real problems. The course begins with an exploration of technical drawings and the shapes that make them. Learners experiment with turning flat shapes into 3D forms inside Maker’s Empire, building their confidence in visualization and spatial thinking. Along the way, they discover how regular polygons, 3D shapes and technical graphics help bring ideas to life.
The course culminates in an open-ended design thinking challenge, following the engineering design process (STREAM). Students identify a real problem at home or school, sketch possible solutions using 2D technical graphics and build a 3D prototype using the shapes they’ve learned. Students are talked through the engineering design process as they progress through the course. Teachers may want to add in their own learning experiences to deepen thinking and understanding (ideas are in the teacher guide for the Challenge Course).
Learners will understand not just what shapes are, but how shapes can be combined, transformed and applied to create meaningful, purposeful designs that improve everyday life.
