  • Identify the five major threats: climate change, water quality, marine debris, Crown-of-Thorns Starfish, and fishing practices
  • Apply design thinking to create solutions that help protect the Reef

Who is the Reef Authority?

The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (the Reef Authority) is Australia’s lead management agency for Marine Park management since 1975. The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Act 1975 guides management and best available science to protect values, reduce threats, and improve the current and long-term outlook for the Reef and the communities that depend on it.

The Reef Authority works together with Traditional Owners, other Australian and Queensland government agencies, industry, community organisations, and individuals to help protect and manage the Reef.

In 2003, the Reef Authority launched the Reef Guardian School Program to build students’ knowledge and inspire action to protect environments for future generations.

The Program develops youth as environmental leaders by deepening their understanding of reef ecosystems, associated threats and conservation actions. While centred on the Great Barrier Reef, it is globally adaptable to local waterways, cultures and curricula.

Teachers access a digital portal, expert-led virtual sessions, adaptable resources, global connections and support for student-led projects. These tools promote ocean literacy, sustainability and responsible practices, aligning with UN Sustainable Development Goals and Blue Economy priorities.
